Singles, Albums and their life span
Sound of The Underground
Girls Aloud were breaking records before they even began. They were the first Girlband EVER in UK history to debut at Number 1…a world record no one can take away from them! They went straight to number 1 after selling 213,000 copies compared to One true voices 147,000 of their song Sacred Trust. The B side was a cover of East 17’s Christmas number 1 hit Stay another day. Kimberley was happy they got to cover this as this was the very first single she bought! Nicola dedicated their cover of Stay another day to John McMahon - who helped them during popstars the rivals…who died on Christmas day 2002, by Nicoal saying at his funeral ‘Stay another day is yours’
No Good Advice
Despite all the problems Cheryl had…aka possibly could be going to jail the girls released their second single no good advice. This clarified them as a girlband according to the press as it reached number 2 in the singles charts. The girls however…hated making the video as it was filmed in a cold warehouse and with only 24 hours to film the video there were so many problems…eg the girls pants kept splitting in various places…
The song itself was finally released on 12th May 2003 (despite the fact they started work on it in march 03)…selling 42,762 copies in the first week getting it to number 2. The song couldnt knock R Kelly’s Ignition off the top spot.
Sound of the underground - the album
A week later they released their first album…Sound of the underground. 15 songs to prove the girls talents…they also beat One true voice to releasing a 2nd single…never mind an album! The album never made it to number 1..however on 6th June 2003, Sound of the underground went gold…with over 100,000 copies sold! The Album was re-issued on 1st December 2003 with a different cover and 1 or 2 of the tracks changing!
Life got cold
No rest for the wicked ey? On 18th August 2003 the girls released their latest single…life got cold. Cheryl explained saying “The first 2 of our songs were really upbeat and we just really wanted a beautiful ballard that shows off all our voices, and just a variety of music that we release and to prove that we can actually sing a slow song - and that we can actually sing” However their ballard never got them a numebr 1. The highest chart position they got was number 3 - however the band had a 1-2-3 run now…with sound of the undergound hitting number 1, no good advice hitting number 2, and life got cold hitting number 3.
Cheryl in court
On Friday 10th January 2003, Cheryl was accused of assulting a toilet attendant in early 2003. This ended up going to court…The Girls said they never even thought once of kicking Cheryl out of the band once this had happened… On 20th October 2003, Cheryl was found Guilty of bodily harm…and Not guilty for the charge that could have sent her to prison…racial abuse! and her sentenced was to do 120 hours of community service. On behalf of Polydor Records as she was found Not guilty of the racial Charge her place in Girls Aloud was safe.
Jump (for my love)
So 2003 so far had been a massive year for the girls…still number 1 coming into 2003 with sound of the underground…a further 2 singles…and nearly a split as Cheryl went to court…however in September 2003 it was announced that Girls Aloud were going to sing the soundtrack to the film - Love Actually. This was a cover of the 1984 hit by the Pointer Sisters. The release of the song, the promotion for the film and the song were put on hold as Cheryl went back to court…however the song was finally released on 17th November 2003…getting them highest chart position number 2. This time the Girls couldn’t knock Westlife - Mandy off the top spot.
The Show
The Show was released on 28th June 2004…too long for Nadine though. Nadine said that they could have lost potential fans for the fact the last song they released was in November 2003…yet it still did well in the charts…highest chart poisition number 2. So far the girls have had 5 top 5 singles. This time they couldnt knock Usher…but the girls were still impressed by the chart position they got. Also they performed this single live for Top of the pops on their first ever outdoor show for the first time in 40 years of the shows history! As the show was filmed in Newcastle - Cheryl was more than pleased…ending the performance saying ‘Can i just say its so nice to be surrounded by so many Geordies!’
Love Machine
The end of the summer was approaching wich meant Girls Aloud had a new single and this was pure pop! Love Machine was performed as a world exclusive on Top of the pops, and an immediate liking was taken to the song. On 13th September 2004 the song was released…however…the vast majority of music shops never recieved the single till Thursday therefore sabatajing the chance of a number 1 for the girls. They managed to over come this and charted at number 2. This time Eric Prydz ‘call on me’ got the number 1 for this week.
I’ll Stand by you
So every year its a battle between the popstars for whos going to sign the chartiy song for Children in need…it was Girls aloud VS Geri Halliwell - the woman who helped form them in popstars the rivals. Girls Aloud won and released I’ll Stand By you - their 2nd cover and their 2nd number 1. This time the girls complained about the video…as too much sand got into their feet! They managed to sell 58,000 copies in the first week and stayed at number 1 for 2 weeks until it got knocked off by Band aid 20 - do they know its christmas.
What will the neighbours say? The Album
On 29th November 2004 the girls released their 2nd Studio album called What will the neighbours say. However this time the girls had to write a song for the album:
Nadine suffered the most as she admitted that show couldnt write a song to save her life…so Brian Higgins (who helps them write their songs) wouldnt let any of the girls out the room until they have put every ouce of effort into it…what makes ya think Nadine spent along time in that room?
The album itself charted at number 6, selling 85,171 copies in its first week and has since gone double platinum. The girls went on tour with this album for the first time in 2005 - later to release it on a DVD.
Wake me up
Their 8th single - wake me up was released on 21st February 2005. Once again, Top of the pops got the rights for the world exclusive performance of Wake me up…and they recreated the vieo with the motorbikes…only infront of Fearne Cotton and a live audience in BBC Televisions Studio 3! The girls charted at number 4 with this single.
Long Hot Summer
So after a long time since their last single…the girls had been on tour and was ready to bring pop back to the charts!. This song was reelased on 22nd August 2005…and this was the first girls aloud song not to chart into the top 5…however they have had 9 consecutive top 10 hits! The song itself reached a respectable number 7…how? Your guess is as good as mine as the single sold a disapointing 18,541 copies.
Biology
So the unthinkable was going to happen. The Girls were going to release 2 singles and an album all within 4 weeks! If Girls Aloud had money problems or not the charts would be full of Girls Aloud! Their first of the 2 singles that they were going to release was Biology…pure pop since Love Machine. Since this charted in 2005…this has become one of Girls Aloud’s signature songs. Biology was released on 14th Novemver 2005 and went straight in at number 4. The girls now had 10 top 10 hits and were about to break all records as a girl band. While they performed this song on CD:UK - Sarah collaposed due to a kidney infection…just what the girls wanted as they still had to release an album and another single!
Chemistry - The album
On 5th December 2005, the girls released their 3rd studio album! As it was the run up to christmas the girls found it hard to make it top 10 as the album charted at number 11, selling 81,962 copies in the first week! Also released in the same week was a limited version of Chemistry - with a christmas bonus disc.
However the album caused the media to turn against Girls Aloud as the album contained strong language in one of their songs! so the girls fought back and re-recorded no good advice with the same swear word in the song Models…however never made it to cd until the greatest hits cd (Limited edition version only) was released in 2006.
See The Day
One week after the release of Chemistry…and still Biology selling well, the girls released See The day and hoped to get christmas number 1…but with the lead up to christmas it was another disapoint chart position for Girls Aloud…Yes it still made it top 10…but only just! as it charted at number 9! However this song is the first of the girls songs to re-enter the top 200 on downloads and became the first girls aloud song to take over sound of the undergound as their biggest hit being played on the radio!
Whole Lotta History
The Girls were about to hit problems with as far as how they would advertise their singles as from 2006. Top of the pops, the worlds longest running music chart show was in talks of being axed along with CD:UK and pop world. Never the less the girls still had to release songs and next in the line is whole lotta history. Another slow love song. As the way the charts were changing as far as downloads etc…Whole lotta history first charted at number 80…prior to its release on CD. The song was released on 13th March 2006 and its highest chart position was number 6, selling 11,270 in its 1st week. They still had their top 10 hit run and this was the last song Girls Aloud was going to perform on the worlds longest running weekly chart show…Top of the pops! or so we thought…
Something Kinda ooh!
After the girls Chemistry tour and their summer break the Girls were back in October 2006 and had to find ways around the axe of Top of the pops and CD:UK…their main way of advertising their latest singles! The song was released on 23rd October and reached higest chart position on number 3. As this was Girls Aloud’s biggest hit of 2006, the BBC asked them to perform on a 1 off Top of the pops Christmas special…ahhh Top of the pops back on the big day!
The Sound of Girls Aloud - Their greatest hits - the album
So the girls released their greatest hits album a week after something kinda ooh…which had the press asking if the girls were splitting up! Everyone was talking about it…even Steve Wright who even gave them airtime on TOTP2 - reairing No good advice from may 2003…and had the chance to rip the Girls! The Girls got their first number 1 album selling 815,000 copies in the first week! But the girls said that they werent splitting…and to prove this they released a new single…
I think were alone now
So the Girls 4th cover…and another smash at christmas number 1, they covered Tiffanys I think were alone now. The song was used as a soundtrack for the movie Its a boy girl thing. But who were Girls Aloud up against for Christmas number 1? Well they had Take That…who has reformed after 10 years and has spent 4 weeks at number 1, McFly and once they heard who had won the X Factor…they knew they had no chance of Christmas number 1…yes Leona got christmas number 1 with a moment like this however the girls got number 4 and their 14th top 10 hit.
Walk This Way!
As the press said…it was the worst cover…EVER! I disagree but for the comic relief song Girls Aloud teamed up with the Sugababes to cover Aerosmith vs Run DMC’s walk this way. Their reason for doing this song…they wanted to hear a girl version of the song…for girls aloud and sugababes fans it was good…for the rest of the world it was a bloody nightmare! However it got to number 1…for 1 week to be knocked off the top spot by the proclaimers…however this was the girls 3rd number 1 and their 15th top 10 single!
Sexy! No! No!No!
Summer 2007 and the girls were making a comeback…even though they had never been away! Their new single off the un-named album was to be released on 3rd september 2007…however was avaliable on download the friday before! It got into the top 10…their 16th top 10 hit and got highest chart position of number 5! But without top of the pops and CD:UK what did they perform on? The National Lottery!
Tangled up
So their 5th album and 4th studio album was released 1 week before their 17th single call the shots tangled up managed to get to number 4 in the album charts. The media says its good…and girls aloud hold on the crown of pop…but only just!
Call The Shots
Cheryl said this song was going to break records! and bein honest…she wasnt far from the truth! Call the shots was released on 19th November as a download and as a cd a week later…however got to number 9 on downlaods alone…beating the spice girls on full CD release! who only got to number 11. When they released Call the shots on full CD release they got highest chart position of number 3…in the singles charts…it got to number 2 in the download charts and number 1 on the airwaves charts! As it got number 1 on the airwaves this is the girls aloud song that is the most played on the airwaves beating see the day and sound of the underground!
Also the BBC asked the girls to perform Call the shots on Top of the pops…WHAT? Yes Top of the pops was back for the 2nd time since the axe of the full weekly chart and Girls Aloud were asked to sing their biggest hit of 2007…and this was call the shots!
Cant speak french
So the new single…their 18th single Can’t Speak French was released on 17th March 2008. After performing on Ant and Dec’s Saturday night takeaway, The Paul O’Grady Show and T4 did they get to number 1? No! They still got a top 10 hit…making it their 18th consecutive top 10 hit but it got a dismal number 9 in the charts! It’s now classed as cheesy pop compared to their last single Call the Shots…its not their best…but ya gotta admit…its got a catchy tune!
The Promise
So Girls Aloud have announced despite Cheryl being a judge on the ITV hit show the X Factor they have a new single out called The Promise - which was the girls 4th number 1 and 19th top ten singles…it only stayed there for 1 week as the charity song “hero” by the x factor finalists claimed the top spot.
Out of Control
The girls 5th Studio album…and their first studio album that got number 1…the press still say it has a grown up theme and that the girls have grown up since their sound of the underground days. A month later they re-issued Out of Control with had an extra cd and a 24 page book. The girls said it would make an excellent Christmas present!
The Loving Kind
Wow! Their 20th single! More than 6 years on and they’re still going! This single was co-written by the 1980’s boyband Petshop Boys. Its released early January 2009. Will it be a number 1 hit? More importantly after 20 singles is this the end for Girls Aloud?
Girls Aloud as a Band:
Girls Aloud are the few bands/artists who have been successful after winning a contest.Their first number 1 was Christmas number 1 in 2002 “sound of the underground”. They beat their rivals “one true voice” who got to number 2.Since then they have had 19 top 10 singles (4 songs being number 1) and 6 albums. They are the only band to have more than 10 top ten hits, beating the spice girls and Destineys Child. In 2007 Girls Aloud made it into the Guinness book of records for the most top ten hits by a girl band.Their 4 number 1’s are:
- Sound of The Underground
- I’ll Stand By You
- Walk This Way
- The Promise
-
What will the neighbours say tour (2005)
-
Chemistry Tour (2006)
-
The Greatest Hits Tour (2007)
-
Tangled Up Tour (2008)
-
Out of Control Tour (2009)
I’ll stand by you was the official children in need song for 2004.
Walk this way was the official comic relief song in 2007.
The official Charts company say Love machine and no good advice should have got to number 1 however due to problems with the record company the CD’s hit the shelves on Thursday rather than Monday, therefore couldn’t sell enough to hit number 1.
Top of the Pops
Back in 2002 TOTP criticised the girls for refusing to sing live on the 2002 christmas edition of Top of the pops as they wanted to focus on their dancing. The BBC said that bar Nadine the girls couldn’t sing…Cheryl’s response was “We’ve been singing live for the last 3 months…I think that proves we can sing!”
Girls Aloud were the final band ever to appear on the original weekly editions of Top othe pops in the closing titles!
Officially Girls Aloud’s last performance was Whole lotta History…however they were asked to come back for the Christmas special in 2006 to perform Something Kinda ooh! The Girls were also asked to come back for the Christmas Top of the pops special in 2007 to perform call the shots! For the 3rd time since the axe of the original Top of the pops, they performed their number 1 hit The promise on Christmas Top of the pops in 2008.
And TOTP2 has had its share of Girls Aloud too…As the girls released their Greatest Hits album in 2006 This caused speculation that they were about to split! This made Steve Wright air No good Advice from 2003. Steve was actually happy as he thought they were splitting as he has admitted on Radio 2 that he hates them! However Steve never shuts up about them and is always playing them on his Radio 2 show…maybe its a hate/love realtionship thing?
In December 2008 TOTP2 @ Christmas showed their performance of Biology from October 2005…did anyone actually watch this episode of TOTP2 as it was broadcasted in the early hours of the morning?
Tours
As well as this they have done 4 tours and about to do their 5th in the middle of 2009. The tours are:
-
Celebration
-
I predict a riot
-
Teenage dirtbag
-
Girls on Film
-
With every heartbeat
-
Rehab
There was going to be a tour for the sound of the underground album they released in 2003 however as the person who helped them form as a band on popstars the rivals died on Christmas day in 2002…therefore they didnt have enough time to tour as they were in talks of doing a tour with One true voice as part of a Popstars the rivals tour…however this was axed as not enough tickets sold!

Rare songs
Over the years the girls have sung one off performances. Some of these are:
The Tabloids
As you may notice Girls Aloud are never out of the papers! Over 5 years theyve had paperatzi follow them everywhere!
-
Cheryl made headlines in early 2003 (weeks after the band formed) for assaulting someone
-
They all made headlines for refusing to sing live on their first Top of the pops performance with the song “Sound of the Underground”, with the BBC accusing them that they cannot sing!
-
Kims been smoking drugs
-
Nadine’s been dating hollywood star Jessie Metcalf…notice the word “been” and in 2007 just before the greatest hits tour they split up…and now theyre back together…and then they finally split up!
-
Cheryl got married to footballer Ashley Cole - and rumours are that Ashley has cheated on Cheryl…They were true but are now back together!
-
Supposedly Nadine wears no underware - however confirmed in the documentary “Girls Aloud off the record” she was…just the papers messed with the picture
-
And of course one girl I havent mentioned yet…Sarah! Shes never out of the papers for being drunk. Look for Saturday morning papers to see her!
And of course the Tabloids favourite story… “Girls Aloud are splitting up” And usually when they say a month that they are splitting up…Girls aloud soon confirm that they are doing something as a band (song, tv programme, concert) to make these rumours utter trash.
Love/Hate
Since day 1 Girls Aloud have been the centre of the arugments with other bands/artists/celebrites. Below are a few of the people Girls Aloud have crossed over they years!
-
Girls Aloud VS One true Voice - The obvious cat fight…both reality TV bands and both going for christmas number 1…so Pete Watermsn stirs up the arguments by accusing the girls of ripping off sound of the underground by orchid - by a band who never formed! Er…Hello who sang the original of Sacred Trust? The Bee Gees? I rest My case!
-
Girls Aloud VS Simon Cowell - Simon had his fair share of ripping the girls as he slagged them off for being a manufactured girl band. He therefore said Girls Aloud need to prove themselves…so he offered them a place on pop idol to perform a song…yet the girls declined by saying ‘We already have proved ourselves’…However the press believe this argument has now died off as Simon asked Cheryl to be a judge on Britains got Talent…Cheryl declined as she said ‘ I know what its like to be at the recieveing end of the criticism.’ Since then she has admitted that she likes Simon and thinks hes a ‘pussy cat’
-
Nicola Vs Matt from Busted - Matt Called Nicola a ‘Rude Ginger Bitch’ after she ignored him at a concert ay G-A-Y…her response…hes just a silly little boy! In the end Matt says that hes got nothing against her but her managments and believes girls aloud will go far!
-
Girls Aloud VS Simon Amstell and Miquita Oliver - Simon described the girls as ‘Vile’…since the beginning of their career the girls have hated popworld…not as much class as Top of the pops…but if you ever see the girls meantion these two people and their response will be…’Oh God! those two knobheads!’ Nicola brands Miquita as ‘ someone who never washes!’
-
Girls Aloud Vs Danni Minogue - The Girls claim Danni ‘less than natural’ Danni wasnt happy at what they said and branded them all as ‘a bunch of chavs’ Bet she was happy to see them perform call the shots on the X Factor in 2007!
-
Girls Aloud VS All Saints - So another band was making a comeback and their new song Rock Steady got top 10…however it sounded like Girls Aloud’s style of music…and listening to both All Saints and Girls Aloud….they do sound similar! Kimberley said ‘Good luck to them but i hope they stay friends this time’ The all saints response was ‘Oh yeh cause we so want to sound like Jump for my love’…The All Saints kinda shout their mouths when their 2nd comeback single never made it into the top 75…and they lost their record contract! I got a feeling Girls Aloud won this argument!
-
Girls Aloud VS Charlotte Church - All Saints werent the only girls that the girls accused of copying their style of music…Charlotte Church also stole their style of music. The girls accused Charlotte of this upon the release of Chrazy Chick. The insults went on for months until Charlotte backed down on her chat show saying that she was happy that Cheryl was marrying Ashley and she wishes them look for the future.
-
Girls Aloud Vs Boy George - Also since day 1 Boy George has hated Girls Aloud saying that the girls never stop moaning…Kimberley responded tho this by replying ‘Where was he when we performed last? oh yeh! picking dog shit up in new york!’ Go Kimberley :D
-
Girls Aloud VS Lily Allen - This has been going on for well over a year now…Lily allen a new girl who was found through myspace! her first hit…smile got to number 1 and the b side to that single was a song called Cheryl Tweedy…Cheryl responded by saying that she was honoured to have a song written by her but she doenst know why lily was writing a song about how good lucking she was? Lily replied by saying ‘I dont want to look like Cheryl…its meant to be Ironic! Kids are looking up to her and is wrong…of course no1 wants to look like Cheryl…ya just think you want to!’ Also Lily refered to Nicola as ‘the ugly one’ Cheryl argued back saying…FIRST I THOUGHT SHE WAS A BREATH OF FREASH AIR BUT NOW I THINK FUCK HER…AT LEAST IM NOT A CHICK WITH A DICK! - Since then they have put their arguing aside when Cheryl sent a congratulations card to Lily for being pregnant.
-
Girls Aloud VS Kaiser Chiefs - So the girls covered I predict a riot for their Chemistry Tour and changed the Lyric ‘to borrow a pund for a condom’ to ‘to borrow a pound for a phone call’ This Made the Kaiser Chiefs mad and they said that they prefer Lily Allen…bet that made Cheryl happy!
-
Girls Aloud VS Chris Moyles - Ok Chris has never admitted that he likes Girls Aloud and theyve admitted that they hate him. However Chris Moyles branded Nicola Robers as an Old Cow and has the face of someone who should work in Netto. Nicola’s response? “I can’t stand him. It’s no surprise I look miserable with him on my case. “And he’s such a good-looking bloke himself, isn’t he?”
Why I like Girls Aloud
People ask why I like Girls Aloud. I like them because they have re released a lot of songs and made them work. They have also sung a lot of variety of songs. From serious, emotional songs (I’ll stand by you) to dance (something kinda ooh) to rock (walk this way) to just standard pop music (love machine)Also people always ask who is my favourite singer, who’s the best looking and who’s the best actress from Girls Aloud so below is a sum up of me and Girls Aloud:
- Best singer – They’re all really good!
- Best actress on Top of the pops – Cheryl
- Best song Girls Aloud have sung – I’ll stand by you
- Best covered song– I’ll Stand by you
- Best original song – Call the Shots
- My Favourite – Its a tie between 3! Nadine, Cheryl and Kimberley!
Girls Aloud Greatest Hits Tour 2007
I went to see Girls Aloud Live at Wembley Arena on 26th May 2007 and it was wicked. The fact I had front row tickets was good but ive never been that close to Girls Aloud ever! Click here to read my report about the concert.
Girls Aloud Tangled Up Tour 2008
I went to see Girls Aloud on their Tangled up tour a little closer to home in Manchester this year and they were even better than 2007’s performance! Click here to read my report about the concert
X factor
2008 and Cheryl Cole got asked to be a judge on The X factor…this got more publicity for the girls…and im guessing their 4th number 1 “The promise. Cheryls act won! Alexandra Burke also cliamed Christmas number 1 in 2008.
Whats made Girls Aloud so successful?
